Forgetting Butch

A friend alerted me to the shameful fact that I left Butch Wynegar off my list of the best New York athletes since 1968. In 1976, as a rookie with the Twins, he finished tied for 28th with John Mayberry for the American League MVP award. (Mayberry hit .232 that year, leading one to wonder what the guy who finished 29th did.) As a catcher for the Yankees from 1982-1986, Wynegar slammed 27 home runs (combined), and hit, in his last two seasons with the club, .223 and .206. Also, his real name is Harold Delano Wynegar Jr. (beat that), and he inspired at least one excellent blog. So, consider the list amended, in some fashion, to include him.
