All Hail the Prince
In 2004, George Harrison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the ceremony, an all-star band played "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." It starts out fine, with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Harrison's lookalike son, Dhani, faithfully recreating the song. Then Prince comes in and scatters them like bowling pins. His guitar solo starts just after the 3:30 mark. Enjoy:

Good god, I love that man. The smile he flashes right around 5:00 when the first portion of the solo is winding down . . . it's like the look he gave at the end of that Foo Fighters song at the Superbowl: "Yeah, I really am this good."
Good Lord.
I saw a lot of Hendrix in him. Showmanship combined with some great solo lines. No wanking.
I wonder about a few things though.
1) When he was soloing and did a trust fall into the audience the security guy caught him. That had to be pre-planned. If it wasn't then that was totally cool.
2) At the end when he whipped off his guitar (without so much as nicking his hat) and threw it up in the air, who caught it? You can't see on the video. I like to imagine that it just kept floating upwards powered by Prince mojo and is in a geosynchronous orbit around earth.
3) You're right JW, it's striking the way he just bolts from the stage while everyone else is soaking upapplause.
I bought the 9 DVD set of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances and inductions, and this is on one of the discs. Additional footage shows Dhani, Harrison's son, frantically running around backstage looking for Prince. "Where's Prince?" He asks everybody. Billy Gibbons of Zz Top gives him a confused look like "who's Prince?" that is just priceless. The Purple One was not to found. He left the building.
